Blaine, Minn. (February 20, 2015) -- Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has issued a proclamation declaring Sunday, February 22, 2015 as "Paul Erickson Day in Minnesota.”
The proclamation honors Erickson's service as the Executive Director of the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission for 27 years. He retired last December, after serving under five Minnesota governors -- Rudy Perpich, Arne Carlson, Jesse Ventura, Tim Pawlenty and Dayton.
Paul will be honored at the Minnesota Wild home game against the Dallas Stars Sunday evening, where he will announce "Let's Play Hockey" prior to the puck drop.
Here is the text of the proclamation:
WHEREAS: Paul Erickson recently retired as the Director of the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission, capping a distinguished career as the agency’s director since 1987, and
WHEREAS: Erickson provided the business vision and much of the creative energy behind the creation and successful growth of the National Sports Center in Blaine, a 600-acre amateur sports campus that attracts four million visitors a year, and brings over $40 million in annual out-of-state economic impact to Minnesota, and
WHEREAS: Erickson was the lead originator of the Schwan’s USA CUP, which has become the largest youth sporting event in the nation, with 15,000 athletes representing 1,060 teams from 21 states and 19 foreign countries in 2014, and
WHEREAS: Erickson was a pioneer in promoting amateur sports events as a major source of tourism revenue for Minnesota and he has been tireless in urging Minnesota communities to build facilities and create events to attract sports tourists to their community, and
WHEREAS: Under Erickson’s leadership the MASC’s state grant programs have improved the sports experience for thousands of Minnesota families, and
WHEREAS: Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission Chair Alex Rowell said, “The legacy Paul Erickson has created will benefit Minnesotans for generations to come. The facilities and programs he has helped build are well-used and well-loved by local athletes and visitors.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I MARK DAYTON, Governor of Minnesota to hereby declare Sunday, February 22, 2015 as PAUL ERICKSON DAY in Minnesota.
