BLAINE, Minn. (January 16, 2013) – The National Sports Center (NSC) in Blaine, Minn. announced the appointment of Tom Soehn as the facility’s new Director of Soccer Development and Recruiting. In that position, Soehn will be responsible for team marketing and recruitment for Schwan’s USA CUP, the largest annual event held at the NSC and one of the largest youth soccer tournaments in the world. He will also be charged with developing the NSC’s soccer programs and events throughout the entire year.

“Schwan’s USA CUP is one of the most recognized brands in youth soccer, worldwide,” said Soehn. “I have great respect for the history and reputation of the tournament, and I am excited to help it grow in new ways. After spending so many years in professional soccer, I’m looking forward to devoting that same energy and passion toward building youth soccer,”

Soehn has experience at all levels of soccer -- player, coach and front office administrator. He grew up in Chicago playing youth soccer before attending Western Illinois University, where he has been inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame. After college Soehn played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League, Canadian Soccer League, American Professional Soccer League, finishing his career with a four-year run in Major League Soccer (MLS), playing for the Dallas Burn and Chicago Fire. He retired in 2000.

Upon retirement, Soehn graduated to the coaching box, serving as an assistant coach under Bob Bradley at the Chicago Fire and Peter Nowak at DC United. From 2006 to 2009, Soehn replaced Nowak as the head coach at DC United.

In January of 2010, Soehn was appointed as the Director of Soccer Operations for the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS. He served in that position until May of 2011, when he moved into the Whitecaps’ head coaching position on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2011 season. He finished his career with the Whitecaps in 2012 as the Director of Soccer Operations.

“We could not be more excited to have someone with Tom’s experience to lead the NSC’s soccer marketing efforts,” said Kara Radeke, the NSC’s Senior Director, Soccer & Field Sport Programs. “Having a person of his caliber take the reins of USA CUP sales and marketing, definitely takes us up to the next level.”
